Asia Arsenic Network: Vision, Mission, and Core Values

The vision of the Asia Arsenic Network (AAN) is to create a society in which all communities, particularly those in arsenic-affected areas, have universal access to safe and sustainable drinking water, understand the health risks associated with arsenic exposure, and possess the knowledge and capacity to manage water resources responsibly. AAN envisions a future where environmental hazards no longer compromise public health, and communities are empowered to actively participate in water safety governance, hygiene promotion, and environmental stewardship. This vision extends beyond providing infrastructure; it emphasizes long-term sustainability, behavioral change, and equitable access, ensuring that vulnerable and marginalized populations are not left behind in the pursuit of safe water and improved public health outcomes.

The mission of AAN is to implement integrated arsenic mitigation and WASH interventions that combine scientific research, technical solutions, community engagement, and capacity building. The organization is committed to reducing health risks associated with arsenic contamination by promoting access to safe water and hygienic practices, while simultaneously strengthening the capacity of communities and local institutions to manage water resources effectively. AAN seeks to ensure that water interventions are scientifically sound, socially inclusive, environmentally sustainable, and responsive to local needs, integrating both chemical and microbiological water safety measures. The mission also includes fostering knowledge generation and research collaboration by operating arsenic centers and environmental laboratories, providing training opportunities, and supporting local and international researchers to advance innovative solutions in water safety and public health.

AAN’s work is guided by a clear set of core values that underpin all organizational practices and programmatic interventions. Central to these values is community empowerment, with AAN prioritizing the transformation of communities from passive recipients of services into active agents of water resource management. This approach emphasizes participatory planning processes, the formation and strengthening of community-based water user committees, and inclusive decision-making mechanisms that ensure the meaningful participation of women, youth, and marginalized groups. By embedding ownership at the community level, AAN promotes long-term responsibility, resilience, and sustainability of water systems.

Equity and inclusion are fundamental principles guiding AAN’s interventions. The organization is committed to ensuring that safe water and WASH services are accessible to all, particularly vulnerable households, women-headed families, and socially or economically marginalized populations. Project designs intentionally address barriers related to gender, poverty, disability, and geographic isolation, ensuring that no group is excluded from the benefits of arsenic-safe water and improved sanitation. This inclusive approach strengthens social cohesion and enhances the overall effectiveness of WASH interventions.

AAN also places strong emphasis on sustainability, recognizing that long-term impact depends on systems remaining functional beyond the project lifecycle. Sustainability is pursued through a combination of sound technical design, continuous community training, and institutional linkages with local authorities and service providers. Operation and maintenance mechanisms, cost-sharing models, and local capacity development are integrated into all projects to ensure water systems can be managed and maintained independently over time.

Transparency and accountability are central to AAN’s organizational ethos. The organization maintains high standards of financial and operational integrity through transparent reporting systems, regular monitoring and evaluation, and open communication with stakeholders. Clear accountability mechanisms ensure that AAN remains answerable to the communities it serves, its partners, and its donors, reinforcing trust and credibility at all levels.

Collaboration is another defining value of AAN’s work. The organization actively engages with government agencies, local authorities, non-governmental organizations, academic institutions, and international development partners to strengthen technical capacity, share knowledge, and leverage resources for greater impact. Through these partnerships, AAN contributes to coordinated sectoral responses and alignment with national water and public health strategies.

By aligning its vision, mission, and core values, AAN ensures that all programs are strategically focused, ethically grounded, technically rigorous, and socially responsive. This framework not only guides day-to-day operations but also reinforces the organization’s credibility and long-term commitment to addressing the public health crisis caused by arsenic contamination in Bangladesh and across Asia.
